Background Information - Job-specific
The Kerem Shalom (KS) is a commercial crossing with a vital role in Gaza. . Any type of goods that enters the Gaza Strip comes through this crossing. Hence, any interruption to the operations at Kerem Shalom Crossing affects every aspect of life for Palestinians living in Gaza.
Being the main and the only commercial crossing in operation, it is a top priority for the PA to ensure safety and security of the crossing, its staff and the transferred goods, to reduce economic losses and transaction costs. These losses could result from the damage of commercial goods subject to weather conditions such as sun, rain and dust; vandalism; fires and storm water flooding. In addition, the non-availability of a source for potable water at the crossing means sub-optimal working conditions for the KS staff and users.
The aim of this intervention is to reduce economic losses and transaction costs at KS through improvement of the infrastructure at the Palestinian side of the crossing. The intended short- and medium-term outcomes are to protect food and medical supplies from damage due to weather conditions, and from vandalism as well as increase the level of safety and security at KS.
The project will include the design and construction of a steel shed on a 6,000m2 area; and the installation of a 1,230m fence around the whole site.
The project team will work closely with the General Administration for Borders and Crossings (GABC) as all maintenance works at the Palestinian side are conducted by the GABC.
